Why can’t I just specify pipe supports the “old way”?

Weld-on supports represent heat sink conditions with resulting energy loss. Expensive like materials, welding and inspection procedures are often required on high temperature alloy steel pipe to minimize the likelihood of stress corrosion and to assure a sound weld. Available standard catalog hangers may not permit the maximization of support spacing and the resulting minimization of the number of supports required on the job – possible with the use of pre-insulated pipe supports. Today’s light density fiberglass insulation has insufficient compressive strength to support most pipe loads without crushing out – often requiring the contractor to be innovative at each support point. Load rated insulated pipe supports offer an appropriate and economic solution.

Welded Insulated Pipe Anchor

Why are there so many models of insulated pipe supports?

The load rating of each support is often dependent upon how the support is mounted (flat surface, roller, clevis hanger). Heavy valve loads, wind loads, and/or thermal loads may have to be accommodated. Provision for axial and/or lateral travel, due to thermal growth, may have to be made. The pipe may require guiding or restraint. Supports mounted on 10′-0 centers do not require the load carrying capability that is required by supports on 40′-0 centers. These and other considerations resulted in the creation of a family of insulated pipe supports enabling the customer to select the most economic unit sufficient for the purpose intended. Cold Insulated Pipe Anchors with Axial Stops

Cold insulated pipe anchors with axial stops

Cryogenic pipe supports, ranging in diameter from 6″ to 38″, were designed to support and insulate piping in an LNG receiving and regassification plant. The “cold shoe anchors” were designed for temperatures down to -260°F and a load range of 26,000 lb. to 210,000 lb. A combination of high density polyurethane foam (PUF) and Permali® was used for the insulation. The center stops that are welded to the process pipe were built from 304 stainless steel, and carbon steel was used for the remainder of the shoe.

High Temperature Pre-Insulated Supports

My design requirements are special and I do not find exactly what I want in your catalog. Why don’t I design a pipe support for myself?

Pipe Shields, Inc. has developed a “standard concept” for its family of insulated pipe supports. Utilizing that concept, we have been able to readily modify it and adapt it to meet a wide variety of applications. Many of these modifications and adaptations have not been included in this catalog. In addition, the materials and design configurations have been extensively tested and/or analyzed, allowing Pipe Shields, Inc. to readily and economically respond to any pipe support need. As experts in the insulated pipe support field, we can save you expensive design time – especially on “fast-track” projects.

Why can’t I add Pipe Shields, Inc.’s name to a list of methods and/or vendors currently in our specifications?

To control the quality of pipe supports on the project, it is necessary to avoid the ambiguity present in many of today’s existing specifications. The Insulating Contractor must be made aware that the purchase and installation of insulated pipe supports are responsibilities of the Mechanical Contractor, so that his bid may be adjusted accordingly. To assist you, we have prepared typical; general mechanical specifications for insulated pipe supports which may be found elsewhere in this catalog. If you have a current set of specifications, send it to us for our review and recommendations.
